One century ago....
A Substitute Shinigami shook the world, both physical and Spiritual, to its very foundation, unveiling secrets and long-hidden plots with a reckless abandon that had many of the powers-that-were stunned in complete silence. This Substitute, and his friends, showed that there was inherent weakness in the system the Shinigami had held to for millennia since their inception as the keepers of the cycle of reincarnation. He also revealed a new set of enemies, about whom the Shinigami would likely never have known otherwise.
Eighty years later, several of the higher ups, among the Shinigami, XCution, the Hollow and Arrancar swarm, in truth every single group that had any spiritual power, grew ill with a strange plague that was capable of infecting even the most powerful among them. Over the course of the next decade, every single person in power was lain low by this plague, claimed by its strange virulence.
Now, another decade later, the world is in shambles. The Shinigami have been all but decimated, their Captains, Lieutenants, and several of their seated officers from every division - even the Kido Corp - dead and gone. The Hollows are now all that's left, with nothing above Gillian class, and few enough of those at that. XCution was hit no less hard, all their leaders claimed by the disease. And even the vestiges of the Quincy in hiding were not safe from this disease.
The world is continuing on. New hotspots of spiritual activity are flaring up, even as those thought to be stable are dimming and falling dormant. Now, it is up to those who survived to rebuild their organizations, and brace themselves for whatever is coming next.
OOC: All those faces you remember? Yeah, they're gone. Big names are all dead, and their appearances are NOT available without substantial modification. You, the player, will be starting as a low ranking, low powered member of whichever race you choose, and have to work your way up through the plot to become one of the new powers that be. But be wary. Disaster never truly stops striking.
